As Afghanistan recovers from past conflict, it has become clear that the country
is in need of physical rebuilding as well as economical and social rebuilding. Many
post conflict countries experience a temporary boom in construction as they jump
start their efforts to return their country to its original state. However, although
the construction-boom is often temporary, it establishes a foundation for future
business. This entrepreneurial foundation can then be channeled into other industries
or activities for the benefit of its citizens.
Before any headway can be made on the road to rebuilding the physical infrastructure
of Afghanistan, two obstacles need to be addressed. Afghanistan sorely lacks domestic
machinery and construction equipment as well as a workforce trained in its operation
and maintenance. Because of these two shortfalls, most major projects are awarded
to international firms who have expert engineers, machinery, management, and materials.
The current demand stems from several types of construction activities:
-
Major military-related projects
-
Government reconstruction projects (roads, power, water,
irrigation systems)
-
Large scale private and business construction fuelled by
business
opportunities
-
Small scale development of retail and residential construction
ATVI recognizes this demand and has created its Construction Trades course in order
to train and supply a skilled construction-based workforce.
