Vehicle
use in Afghanistan has grown dramatically since 2002, growing from just 20,400 registered
vehicles to over 340,000 in only one year. Although the 94% growth rate is mainly
due to the Afghan Ministry of Educations’ vehicle registration drive, a general
vehicle ownership rate is expected to continue at a progressive rate.
Currently,
1.4% of the Afghan population owns a vehicle, a number that is projected to grow
to 4% of the population by 2015. Although the level of vehicle ownership in Afghanistan
is still nominal by international standards, it still indicates a growing need for
a skilled automotive/mechanical workforce.
In
response the rising demand in automotive maintenance in Afghanistan, ATVI is providing
an Automotive Systems Technology Training program. The program involves an in depth
study of basic automotive systems, automotive electrical and electronic systems,
maintenance of heavy trucks, and management of a vehicle maintenance shop.
